2009 Midwest Conference Focuses on Addiction Recovery
"Roads to Recovery" was the focus of the sixth annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse Aug. 12-14 at the Hilton Frontenac, 1335 S. Lindbergh Blvd., in St. Louis. The conference was a result of a joint endeavor by addiction specialists, problem gambling program coordinators and organizations throughout the five-state region – Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

The conference, which was partially funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), featured nationally acclaimed addiction experts from throughout the country.

The three-day event opened on Aug. 12 with a keynote address presented by Dr. Michael Flaherty, executive director for Northeast Addiction Technology Transfer Center, followed by a panel discussion involving several specialists in the judicial, treatment, industry, child welfare and consumer fields.

In addition to Flaherty, other keynote speakers for the conference included: Dr. H. Westley Clark, director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Marc Potenza, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University; and Ron Willis, mental health consultant and president of Green Porch Swing Productions.

DVDs of keynote presentations and select general sessions are available for purchase. Please click here to download an order form. Questions can be directed to Holly Koofer-Thompson at (573) 751-4050 or Betsoff@molottery.com.
